Kells ran away with the U14 Cumbria Cup final in a strong second-half display against a gallant Seaton Rangers.

Played at Workington Town on Sunday, Kells finally sealed it with a 42-4 victory after only taking an 18-4 advantage in at the break.

James Ennis set Kells on their way as early as the fifth minute when the stand-off sliced through for the touchdown and when Kieran Fleming added the first of his six conversions, Kells were up and running.

Seaton played some good rugby over the next five minutes and were rewarded for their efforts on the 10 minute mark when a clever cross field kick from centre Joe Roper was anticipated by his scrum-half Todd Atkinson.

He was first to react to the mistake it caused in the Kells defensive line and get the touchdown, to bring the score back to 6-4.

Unfortunately that was the closest the Rangers were to get for Kells ran in two further first half tries.

First James Ennis went over after 20 minutes, then two minutes later Kells went virtually the full length. Centre Daniel Grears made a great run out of defence before shipping it out to Ennis who offloaded to the supporting CJ Irving.

He touched down by the posts to give Fleming an easy kick and Kells were 18-4 up at the break.

Seaton played better in the opening 10 minutes of the second period, Billy Challenger making some good yards on several occasions and with centre Joe Roper starting to show some skills it was starting to looked good for the Rangers.

But then Kells moved up a gear and hit them with four well-worked tries, all goaled by Fleming.

Will Ennis started the ball rolling again for Kells, the loose-forward charging over from 40 metres out in a great run to the line.

Four minutes later good yardage from props Joe Johnson and Karl Garner set up James Ennis for his hat-trick.

Daniel Grears, who was having a fine game in both attack and defence, crossed for Kells’ third try of the half, the centre crashing over from 10 yards out.

The final touchdown of the game came in the final minute after a great break out of defence by James Ennis up to half way.

It was carried on by Clarke Chambers, taking it up into the Rangers’ 20-metre zone before being pulled down. A quick play the ball out to Fleming saw him finish off a good afternoon’s work. Final score: Seaton Rangers 4 Kells 42.

The man-of-the-match award for his workhorse efforts throughout the game deservedly went to the Kells loose forward, Will Ennis.

In the U16 County Cup final, Wath Brow Hornets lifted the trophy after a narrow 20-14 win over Ellenborough Rangers.

The Brow led 10-6 at the break with a try and conversion from second rower Joe Power plus the first of two tries from centre Andrew Bulman. Elbra replied with an Owen Hoyles try and conversion.

In the second half Jake Pearce extended the Brow’s lead after eight minutes, going over the Elbra whitewash and touching down behind the posts to give Power an easy goal, 16-6.

The Rangers hit back six minutes later with loose forward Rhys Burr racing down the touchline before rounding the Brow’s full back and going in mid-way out, to make it 16-10 to Wath Brow.

Elbra were right back in it going into the final five minutes of the game, hooker Niall Gray darting over in the corner to reduce the arrears to two points at 16-14.

But it was the Brow who were to close the game out in the final play of the game, Bulman crashing over for his second try to make it 20-14 in favour of Wath Brow.

In the U16 league fixture, Kells ran riot at Cockermouth when nilling their opponents in a 40-0 score line.

Callan Weighman and Aaron Burns both picked up braces of tries, there was also a touchdown from Jack Holliday plus a try and six goals from Jack Allen.

In the U12 Top Four semi-finals, played on Monday night, there were wins for Hensingham and Kells.

Hensingham played hosts to Egremont Rangers and had to come from behind late on in the game to secure a place in next weekend’s final, winning this one narrowly by 22-20.

Harvie Hill contributed to Hensingham’s win with two tries and one conversion, other four pointers coming from Logan Holgate with two and one from Lewis Roberts.

In reply, for Egremont, Ethan Johnstone crossed twice, with Leon Brennan and Finn Henderson also crossing the whitewash. Oliver Scott landed two conversions.

Hensingham’s opponents in the final will be arch-rivals Kells who put Ellenborough to the sword on their own turf winning comfortably by 36-6.

Billy Murray and Sam Murtagh both crossed twice for Kells, Kaitlan Mellon going over for one and Blaine Graham weighed in with a try and four goals.

Elbra’s reply was a Ciaran Laverty try, goaled by Rocco Okesene.
