Workington speedway rider Kyle Bickley came agonisingly close to being crowned the 125cc European champion.

The 13-year-old picked up a fourth place and two wins in the heats but finished as runner-up in the final to Poland's Marcin Turowski.

Kyle actually led in the final up until the third lap when he lost his power in his bike and slipped behind Turowski.

Kyle was up against 20 riders from across Europe in the competition near Munich in Germany.

His dad Tony said: "The bike wasn't as fast as it was in the heats. The speed just wasn't there in the final."

Kyle will now turn his attention to the fourth round of the U16 British Youth Championships at Rye House on Sunday.

He is competing in the 250cc class and is still in with a chance of winning the competition which is run over six rounds.

Then on August 8, Kyle will go up against 44 riders from across the globe in the Speedway Youth World Cup 250cc in Lamothe, France.

Tony added: "This will be the biggest one. This is like a world grand prix for Kyle."
