A pulsating West Cumbria Youth League opener saw Wath Brow Hornets Under-14s come from behind to snatch victory over Hensingham.

The Whitehaven side had got off to a flyer in the first period of their home fixture and led 20-4 at the break, but the wheels fell off in the second half as Wath Brow stormed back to steal it 32-24.

Harvie Hill, Reece Connolly, Jake Rothery and Sam King all ran in first half tries for Hensingham, of which Noel Branthwaite landed two conversions.

Wath Brow's only points in the first half came from Harry Wilson with a four pointer.

Liam Lithgow started the fight back for the Hornets when crossing the home side whitewash early on in the second half and with Morgan Ackerly tagging on the extras, the Brow were in double figures but trailing 20-10.

Another two quick touchdowns from Wilson to complete his hat-trick, of which Ackerly goaled one, and the Brow were level at 20 apiece.

Hensingham then threw everything at their opponents to try and gain a foothold in the game and it paid off minutes later with Jack Telford going over in the corner, for 24-20.

The game was now in full flow and could have gone either way as both teams showed some fantastic skills.

But, with Hensingham pinned in their own 20 metre zone, Ackerly sliced through a gap in the home side's defensive line to touch down and after adding the conversion, Wath Brow edged ahead 26-24.

The Hornets finally sealed the game with only a few minutes left on the clock when Colton Chisholm powered over for the winning try and with Ackerly adding the conversion, Wath Brow had the points in the bag, winning 32-24.

In the U16 fixtures, Cockermouth A bounced back from their defeat at Millom last week to take the points from their home fixture against Walney, winning by the narrowest of margins by 24-22.

Joe Beaty with two, Adam Watson and Sam Taylor were the home side's try scorers, with Jack Lewis adding all four conversions.

In reply for Walney Nathan Fortey weighed in with two tries, Will Bartlett and Joshua Holmes also crossing. Ben Spencer landed three conversions.

Kells travelled to Cockermouth for their opening game of the campaign and won at a canter, scoring eight tries and only conceding one in a 44-4 winning scoreline.

The visitors were 26-0 up at the break thanks to braces of touchdowns from Kieran Fleming, Daniel Starkie and Clarke Chambers. Fleming on target with the boot on three occasions.

In the second period Kells kept rolling on with Chambers picking up his second try of the game, James Ennis and Callan Weighman also crossed for touchdowns.

Fleming completed the scoring with another three conversions. Cockermouth’s solitary four points came from Chris Potter.

The Egremont Rangers v Millom fixture was switched to Friday night and proved a great move by the Rangers, for the home team came from a 10-4 deficit at the break to win by 32-16 at the final whistle.

The visitors were in control in the first period and deservedly led by 10-0 just before the half time whistle thanks to tries from Charlie Emslie and Ryan Dickinson plus a Ethan Bickerdyke conversion.

Ryan Cruden putting Egremont on the score board with a well taken try just before half time, 10-4 to Millom.

The Rangers were a different outfit in the second half and blasted Millom with three quick tries in a seven minute spell.

Cohen McAlone started the revival when crossing shortly after the restart, this was followed by two tries from Jack Gascoyne in three minutes, one goaled by Ben Caine, to put Egremont 18-10 up.

Back came Millom, pulling it back to 18-16 after Connor Terrill crossed the Rangers whitewash and Bickerdyke adding the conversion.

Egremont rallied again with three more tries in the last 10 minutes, Gascoyne getting the first to complete his hat-trick, Cruden crossed again for his second of the game and Rogan Moss finished off the try scoring to which Billy Thompson added the extras to give Egremont a 32-16 victory.
