Workington Athletic were celebrating as they extended their position at the top of the Smurfit Kappa premier league and also reached the final of the GMB Union Whitehaven Cup.

Last Wednesday night Athletic continued their fine run of form in the league with a 6-0 victory over Windscale.

Ashley Kelly, Tom Pardini, Jordan Kelly, Darren Lumsden, Kyle Graham and Stuart Gray all got on the scoresheet.

Then, on Saturday, they progressed to the Whitehaven Cup final at the expense of Netherhall 3-1, with goals from Mike Kilgour, Gray and Pardini.

They will meet Aspatria in the final, after they saw off the challenge of Cleator Moor Celtic in the other semi, 5-1.

Wayne Iredale led the way with a brace of goals for Aspatria, with one each for Sean Law, Malcolm Graham and Ben Jefferson.

Aspatria made the short midweek trip to Wigton Harriers and came away with all three points to close the gap on second place in the premier league, with goals from Mike Prescott and a brace from Malcolm Graham.

On Saturday, Carlisle City travelled to Cockermouth and snatched a 1-0 victory with Kieron Blair scoring the only goal.

In division one, Tuesday night saw Cleator Moor Celtic leapfrog into third place with a 4-0 victory over Whitehaven Amateurs.

On Wednesday Bransty entertained Borough but couldn’t find their form from the weekend and went down 4-0.

Borough’s goals came from Andrew Marshalsea, Sean Carter, Liam McCulloch and an own goal.

Saturday saw Whitehaven Amateurs entertain Whitestar but they went down 4-2.

Silloth bounced back from a heavy defeat last week with an 11-0 thrashing of Whitehaven Miners Reserves.

Silloth were 4-0 up at half time but didn’t take the foot off the pedal scoring seven more in the second half.

An Andrew Trestianu hat-trick plus braces from Andrew Hardman and Adam Carr set them on their way. Goals from Reece Blake, Robbie Carter, Kris Nichol and Kieran Little completed the scoring.

In the Benevolent Cup, Windscale progressed into the semi-final beating Whitehaven Miners 5-2.

The Hunday Manor Divisional Cup final will see Bransty take on Mirehouse. In the semis, Bransty beat St Bees 4-1 while Mirehouse had a walkover against Hearts of Liddesdale, who couldn’t raise a side.
