Workington Reds and Carlisle United fan Tom Allen has appealed for more information on an old football picture, which was captured in Carlisle.

The picture was taken in 1928. But Tom, a former school teacher who now lives in Doncaster, knows very little other than the player on far left on the front row – his father Ronald.

Ronald went on to be the superintendent of Police in Workington.

Tom, who is the author of "The Team Beyond The Hills" and "Reds Remembered", two books on the history of the Workington Reds, is hoping that some of our readers can help him get to the bottom of the mystery, what the team is called, who the gentleman of the cloth, maybe a teacher/ coach, was.

Tom, who went to school with sports correspondent John Walsh, keeps in touch with the local sports scene and still supports the two teams from afar, as well as Grimsby Town – in his words “The less said about that [the latter] the better!”

Tom played football with John in Workington, and recalls: “Walshie and I started Deer Orchard FC (Cockermouth) off in 1962.

“He was a flying winger and I was a one-footed left-back.”

Although there are 11 players in the picture, there doesn’t seem to be a goalkeeper.

Can you help solve the mystery?
