Carlisle United and Workington Reds will both feature in a football documentary about Bill Shankly which will be premiered this month.

The football documentary Shankly: Nature’s Fire will receive its world premiere in Liverpool on Sunday, October 29.

The BBC commissioned Riverhorse to produce the new feature documentary on the legendary Scottish manager, who managed Workington and Carlisle, as well as Liverpool.

Liverpool’s Philharmonic Hall will be the venue for the premiere which is due to start at 7.30pm and will be followed by a special post-screening Q & A.

Journalist Brian Reade will be joined by Liverpool legends Ian St John and Phil Thompson in conversation alongside filmmakers Mike Todd and Peter Hooton.

Shankly: Nature’s Fire explores the life and times of Shankly, the legendary Liverpool manager who came to leave such a legacy in his adopted home city.

The film is a nostalgic journey into the origins of the world’s favourite game, and about how legends are born and transcend generations.

Todd, director of Riverhorse, said: “Bill Shankly is one of the most iconic sporting figures of the 20th century.

“Much has been said and written about him, but this film will bring a new and expansive look at how and why his legacy has remained so strong.

“Unlike many sports biopics, the fans will form a central part of this piece. Their voice will appear alongside recognisable football names.

“We wanted to explore the unique relationship fans have with their clubs and how it relates to the roots of the game.”

Two years in the making, an impressive array of contributors have taken part.

Players such as St John, Denis Law, Roger Hunt, Kevin Keegan, Steven Gerrard and commentators, including legendary sports writer Hugh Mcillvanney and author Irvine Welsh explore a contemporary narrative of Liverpool Football Club and how fans still rally around Shankly’s name.

The film will receive a limited theatrical run before being released on DVD and video on December 4.
