Grant Holt said his desire to "do something different" was behind his surprise decision to sign for non-league outfit King's Lynn Town.

The Carlisle-born former Premier League striker yesterday joined the Evo-Stik Southern Premier club until the end of the season.

It sees the Harraby man, 36, return to his non-league roots after a memorable career in the professional game.

The Norfolk-based Linnets are a convenient club for Norwich-based Holt but the veteran forward said the chance to help them to promotion whilst furthering his coaching ambitions was also too good to turn down.

Holt said: “I’ve had a lot of offers, I’m very lucky because I’m getting to an age now where I can decide what I want to do and achieve.

“Offers have come in and I’ve looked at them, spoke to the family as you always do, and I came to the conclusion that I wanted to look at doing something different."

Holt, who had been looking for a club since leaving Hibernian in the summer, said working with King's Lynn boss Ian Culverhouse also appealed.

“It’s been ongoing for a while now, I’ve been speaking to Ian and in the end we thought it was the best prospect for myself and what the club is trying to achieve," the former Workington Reds man added.

“I’ve got a fantastic opportunity to come in, work with Ian, who I’ve known for a long time now and who’s an excellent coach and a good manager.

"I’ve got the opportunity to do coaching as well as playing, so everything has kind of fitted in nicely.

"I knew that I was always going to keep playing, it was a just a matter of where and when."

Ambitious King's Lynn are fourth in non-league's third tier and aiming for promotion.

The former Norwich and Nottingham Forest hitman, who was yesterday unveiled along with ex-Norwich team-mate Simon Lappin, added: "It doesn’t matter what football club you go to, there’s always high expectations, that’s just the way the game is.

“When I was at Barrow a long, long time ago we were expected to get promoted. Everyone is involved in the game because they want to achieve stuff.

“One thing that Simon and myself won’t do is just sit in the background. We want to take this club forward as far as it can possibly go.”

Holt could make his debut against Hitchin Town tonight.
