A minute’s applause was held ahead of Notts County’s doomed League Two clash with Morecambe.
Sewell, who was born in Kells, Whitehaven, was capped six times for the Three Lions during his incredible career.
Sewell set the English transfer record in 1951 when Sheffield Wednesday sold the forward to Notts County for £34,500.
He died last week, but a minute’s applause was held in his memory at County.
The League Two clash with Morecambe was abandoned early on, though.
A torrential thunderstorm started shortly before kick-off and the pitch quickly became unplayable.
Referee Dean Whitestone called a temporary halt to proceedings with the scores locked at 0-0.
But, with no sign of the conditions improving and the pitch already waterlogged, representatives of both clubs agreed to abandon the match.
