Workington Athletic are celebrating one of their most successful seasons ever – with five trophies in their cabinet.

In the last Smurfit Kappa Cumberland League final of the season, Athletic secured the Whitehaven Cup after beating Wigton at the Falcon Field, Egremont.

Athletic began stronger and Ashley Kelly cut in at pace from the right wing but was felled in the area by Wigton keeper Ben Gray. But he made amends by saving the resulting spot kick from Matthew Perry to leave it all square at half time.

Gray continued to thwart the Workington side but the deadlock was finally broken on 70 minutes when Stuart Gray shot a low drive into the bottom corner for Athletic.

Workington held out to finish the stronger and take the trophy to add to the Charity Shield, league title, Conway Cup and Ken Glover Shield that they secured this season.
