Workington footballer Rio Hardy has been named offensive player of the week in the Sun Belt Conference after she scored four goals in three days to help her US side to successive wins.

Hardy, who plays for University of South Alabama with her twin sister Steffi, followed up her brace in a 4-0 victory over Georgia Southern last Friday with another pair of goals in a 2-1 win at Troy on Sunday.

Against Georgia Southern, Hardy notched twice late on, first finishing off Audrey Duren's pass before a touch of fortune as her deflected shot looped into the net.

She scored the equaliser at Troy less than two minutes after the hosts broke the deadlock, latching onto a throw-in from Deanna Green before turning her marker and lashing into the top right corner.

Hardy was denied twice by goalkeeper Haleigh Mercer before adding the winner as she pounced to rifle a loose ball into the net from four yards out.

The goals were Hardy's second and third braces of the season for the Jags, who are now unbeaten in eight, and saw her match last season's goal tally of eight.

Head coach Richard Moodie said: "She was brilliant - I think it was a big response.

"She's got goals individually and we've got goals for her as well collectively.

"She wants to be a double-digit scorer.

"After we lost a double-digit scorer, we asked the team, where are the goals going to come from?

"I tell Rio all the time, it's not how many goals you can score, it's how many games you can score in.

"For her to score on Friday and do it again on Sunday, that's why she's here.

"She's clinical when she gets her chances.

"The first one she made a chance out of nothing.

"If she can keep the consistency week in and week out, I think she's going to be a top contender for offensive player of the year in the conference."
