Workington boxing star Darren Askew will bid to become a world champion this weekend.

The 30-year-old, who now lives in Toowoomba, Australia, will face New Zealand’s Anthony Taylor, 27, over 12 rounds in a WBU super lightweight title fight tomorrow.

The fight will take place in Taylor’s in Tauranga, New Zealand.

Askew, who is the Queensland super lightweight champion and has also won the Victoria state super welterweight title, believes his career has been leading to this fight.

The former Stainburn School pupil has been inundated with messages from family and friends back in the UK ahead of the title clash.

Askew has posted pictures on his Instagram account of family members in West Cumbria wearing T-shirts with ‘Team Askew’ branded on them.

Former WBO middleweight and super-middleweight champion Steve Collins was pictured holding up a good luck message to Askew while he was headlining a sportsman’s dinner in Maryport recently.

Askew, formerly of Thirlmere Avenue, said: “I’m feeling good and ready for the fight.

“The messages of support have been overwhelming. It’s great and it does spur me on a great deal.”

Askew used to train at Workington Boys’ Club before moving to Australia in an attempt to further his career.
