Cockermouth's Charlotte Watson has been selected to represent her country at a prestigious orienteering competition.

The 22-year-old, who is currently studying at Edinburgh University, has been called up to the Great Britain squad for the World Orienteering Championships in Scotland in early August.

Charlotte is a member of the West Cumberland Orienteering Club.

Meanwhile, the club hosted its annual Parish Relay event in the grounds of Westlakes Science Park and the semi-urban setting provided an excellent mixture of terrain, varying from open parkland through to complex navigation between buildings and courtyards.

Fast legs, concentration, good navigational choices and the occasional outburst of tactics were required on the night and the winning teams had all these skills covered.

On the senior course, the winning trio was Kate Charles, Rob Stein and Matthew Vokes.

However, as it is traditionally the victorious team that is required to organise the following year’s event it can be argued that second place is the real prize and this was taken by Mark Purkis and Charlotte and Debbie Watson.

In the junior relays it was the dream team of Rosie Spencer, Niamh Hunter and Carys Thomas that came in first ahead of a strong and capable boys’ team comprising of Jonty Goodwin, Joe Sunley and Henry Teasdale.
