A Cockermouth adventure racer is set to appear on prime-time television in man versus machine challenge.

Chris Hope, 39, will star in The Gadget Show on Channel 5 on Monday, November 23.

The show will see Hope, who competes for the GODZone Adventure Team, take on The Gadget Show co-presenter Jason Bradbury in a man versus machine challenge.

Bradbury will be using the latest technology, including an electric bike and GPS, in an adventure race against the super fit former Keswick School pupil at Cheddar Gorge, near Bristol.

Adventure racing is a multi-discipline sport which includes running, mountain biking and kayaking.

It involves mixed teams of four people completing a set course of around 372 miles over four or five days in a non-stop race of about 94 hours.

On appearing on The Gadget Show, Hope said: “It was exciting just to do something different and it was an interesting test because the electric bikes are really powerful.

“Hopefully the show will bring a bit more interest to the sport.”

Hope’s outdoor sporting background started when he used to rock climb as a youngster.

He then got into running and mountain biking, and took part in his first adventure race in 2011.

A year later he tackled his first gruelling non-stop race.

He is a member of the UK’s leading adventure team – GODZone Adventure Team, formerly called Adidas Terrex.

GodZone is fifth in the adventure racing world rankings.

The seven-person team has won every UK Adventure Racing Championship for the last 10 years, are back-to-back European champions and were crowned world champions in 2009.
