Sunday sees Keswick Cricket Club run a Women’s and Girls’ Soft Ball Cricket Festival.

The ECB is launching 180 festivals nationally for women of all abilities to mark this summer’s ICC Women’s World Cup.

Cumbria Cricket is working with local clubs to deliver six soft ball festivals across the county in July 2017.

Keswick Cricket Club’s is the third and final wave of festivals. And so far 300-plus women have signed up – smashing Cumbria Cricket’s target of 240.

Keswick’s festival runs from 2pm to 6pm and will include riendly matches, a family barbecue, children’s entertainment, coaching, music and stalls.

Everyone who registers for the free event is told to expect something different.

The festivals are for everyone but specifically aimed at women who have not played cricket before.

Penny Thompson, director of women and girls’ cricket, says: “We are delighted to be launching this national initiative in women’s cricket here in Cumbria.

“So many girls and women across the county are discovering cricket now, and they are showing us all how fun it can be in new and different formats.

“Women’s soft ball is a brilliant case of mixing up the rules to make the sport fit the players and I think we can all expect something very different from these festival days.”
