Athletes from across Cumbria and the north of England descended on Egremont's Northern Warrior gym at the weekend to do battle.

They took part in the crossfit club's Battle Up North event with local competitors enjoying success.

Around 120 athletes took part in pairs, with the scaled event on Saturday and the more elite RX competition on Sunday, with men's and women's categories in both.

They were put through their paces in five workouts, with the top six pairs then going through to the final where they faced one last test of their endurance.

Paul Morgan, of Whitehaven, was competing on the day.

He said:"The local gyms were all well represented in all the finals and there were people competing from all over the country.

"I've only been doing this for about 12 months, so I entered the scaled competition and we did well to get into the final but just missed out on the podium, coming fourth."

Northern Warrior athlete Richard Houghton, with his partner Rick Wilson, of Carlisle's Crossfit Hawkeye Gym, won the tough RX men's event.

And in the women's RX event, West Cumbria took second with the team of Workington's Sam Findlay and Egremont's Jenny Banks, who both train at Northern Warrior.

In the scaled event, Northern Warrior's William Blackburn and Simon Donnelly were the runners-up in the men's category.

And in the womens', the club's Georgina Parr and Lauren Newton took third.

The event is hoped to be held at least annually from now on.

Crossfit is one of the most popular up and coming sports in the country and the Northern Warrior gym is reaping the benefits with around 200 members.

"It is great for everyone, there are kids classes from 10-years old right up to 60-year-olds training," said Morgan.

"People can come along as absolute beginners, it is all about fitness reflecting your everyday life, with running, body weights, cycling and rowing."
