Young karate stars have returned from a Grand Prix with a haul of medals.

A trio from Hokushinko Martial Arts Club and a youngster from Yokai Kami Karate all finished on the podium.

Hokushinko’s Zinedine Hodgson, Ryan Dobinson and Thomas Johnston, plus Holly Newham, of Yokai Kami Karate, all travelled to Ayr to compete in the Scottish Karate Alliance, the last Grand Prix of the year.

And they did not disappoint, turning in superb performances to finish with a mix of medals.

Zinedine performed exceptionally well, winning gold in kata and in nihon and silver in advanced ippon fighting categories.

Holly was also on top form, following up on her recent accolade at Allerdale Sports Awards, being honoured as a Rising Star.

She was crowned the Scottish Karate Alliance Grand Prix champion for her age and belt after accumulating the most points over the four rounds that make up the grand prix.

Holly went into Saturday’s final only one point ahead of her fellow competitors, taking silver in the 11-14 year old Kata category saw her clinch the title for 2017.

Thomas won silver in advanced ippon fighting category and Ryan won silver in sanbon fighting category.
