Up and coming kart racing star Jonny Edgar has scored a remarkable double victory in Germany.

The 13-year-old, from Asby, confirmed his status as Europe’s top contender with two wins in the German Karting Championships (Deutsche Kart Meisterschaft) at Ampfing on Sunday.

Jonny didn’t arrive at the Ampfing circuit until Friday morning after flying out from Edinburgh on Thursday evening.

Most of his rivals had been practicing there since Tuesday but he adapted quickly and soon established himself among the top pacesetters.

He emerged from Friday afternoon’s timed qualifying session as the second quickest behind Germany’s Hugo Sasse.

He won his opening heat on Saturday, but then had to be content with finishing second behind Sasse in the next one.

Those results guaranteed him a front row slot for the first final and he led this race for all of the 19 laps, despite being followed very closely by Sasse. Third spot was filled by Hadrien David of France.

Everything depended on the next race. Jonny took full advantage of starting from pole position and immediately established a lead of around 20 yards.

For the remaining 19 laps, he managed this gap, only slowing fractionally on his final tour.

This time it was David who came home in second spot with Sasse finishing back in fourth position.

“The German Championships seem to attract lots of attention from some important figures in motor racing, so it’s always handy to get a good result,” said Jonny’s father, Justin. “We’re putting in lots of air miles this year, but so far it’s all been worthwhile.

“Fortunately, Cockermouth School has been very understanding in allowing Jonny time off whenever necessary, but we try to keep this down to an absolute minimum.”
