YEAR six pupils have been battling it out in a bowling competition at Cockermouth’s Harris Park Bowling Club.

Children from All Saints’ Primary School, Fairfield Primary School and St Joseph’s Primary School took part in an inter-schools tournament.

Six pupils from each school entered and points were awar-ded depending on how well each player got on in their games.

Julie Barcock, club secretary, set up the competition in memory of her dad Thomas Pownall.

Fairfield Primary School came first, St Joseph’s were second and All Saints’ were in third place.

Gareth White, year six teacher at All Saints’ Primary School, said: “It’s nice to form a link with a different club and different sport.

“It was a really good idea and hopefully it’s something that will run year on year from now on.”

Damon Newton, a teacher at St Joseph’s School, said: “We always do well in our tournaments and we’re really proud of the pupils. The kids really took to it and they like the fact that it’s competitive, but it’s not as mad as running round a rugby field.”

Fairfield Primary School teaching assistants Angela Watson and Sarah Wotton both attended the event.

Mrs Watson said: “We’re very pleased. We didn’t have much practice and it’s the first time this has been held.

“We’re going to try and include bowls in our PE lessons and the club are very willing to support that so it’s something else to look forward to.”
