Cup action took centre stage in the Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker League this week as the Eric McMullen Memorial Trophy took place.

The seven-a-side handicap competition saw the second games of round robin qualifying take place with Flimby Social being the first to make the semi-finals on the back of a 5-2 over Station Road A.

An easy win for Karl Newton (+21 handicap) in the first frame gave Station Road A the perfect start but, as Paul Vickers (+13) won just as convincingly in the second, Flimby were on level terms.

The third frame produced a significant moment in the context of the match as a relatively easy opportunity on the final ball of the game went begging for Station A’s Darren Lawson (+35), and Martyn Fisher (+30) accepted gratefully.

Frame four did go to Station A with a win by Mike Walker (+18) to pull the score back to 2-2 but it was Flimby who then moved up a gear with victories from Mark Forsyth (+28), Michael Walker (+27) and Geoff Banton (+24).

In the second of the rounds’ three qualifying matches, Workington’s United Club gave themselves an excellent opportunity of making the semi-finals with a 6-1 over Workington Legion.

Tony Hindmoor (+40), Clive Lister (+19) and Willie Fearon (+35) all won for the United Club as the Legion outfit were put under pressure.

A Mark Ritson (+44) victory in frame four did give the Legion some belief, nevertheless this soon evaporated as United captain Andrew Mitchelhill (+11) ensured victory with a win over Louise Evans (+40) in the next.

Dave Chapman (+25) and Dave Holland (+39) galvanised the match victory with wins in the last two frames.

Barring a heavy defeat in their final group match, the United Club look sure to make the last four.

Workington Golf Club delivered a 5-2 home win over Aspatria’s Sun Inn and, after a defeat in their first group match, this victory at least gives them hope of making the next round.

The Golf Club’s Ian Fulton (+30) took the first frame in assured fashion before Mark Brasted doubled the match lead in frame two. Andrew Scott (+32) pulled a frame back with a victory in frame three but it was Bryan Walker (+24) who put the golfers 3-1 up with a win in frame four.

The Sun’s Ben Scott (+33) reduced the the deficit with the aid of a 24-break in frame five but it was Mark Carruthers (+37) who guaranteed the match victory with a win over Ben Irving (+43) in the sixth.

Even though the win was secured, the final point could still prove be the difference between making the semis or not.

And, with this in mind, the Golf Club’s Mark Cowen (+19) made sure he gave his team a strong a chance as possible with a triumph over Robert Dean (+35).
