A former Workington Town player will be among those stepping into the boxing ring at the Zebra Claims Stadium tonight.

The Clash of the Titans 17 event is the promotion's fifth outdoor show and includes seven semi-pro and seven charity fights, with ex-Town player Tony Huddart fighting to raise money for his old club.

Promoter Dave Straughton said: "We've had charity fights since our third show about four years ago, when we raised money for Emily Shutt with Seaton Rangers, and it's just a good opportunity to raise money for great causes.

"It's the fighters who do the actual fund-raising, we just give them the opportunity to do it on a big show, although we do donate money every year.

"We decided to go back to Derwent Park for a bunch of reasons but the main one is it's the biggest and best venue available and both Mark Fryer and Tony Boyd have been really helpful.

"Through being at Derwent Park it's got me back interested in how Town are doing and it's good to hopefully be able to help them a bit financially through both fund-raising and customers at the bar.

"Folk who haven't been before can expect really good fights, a few knock-outs and the best atmosphere of any fight show anywhere."

Doors will open at 5.30pm for the event, with the first fight starting at 6.30pm.

The main event will see Dearham’s Danny Ferguson try to extend his unbeaten run to 10 bouts and take the Clash of the Titans middleweight title against Carlisle's Jake Osgood.

Seaton's Dom Smallwood is boxing to raise money for Workington Town against Jamie Friel, of Distington, who is raising money for brain tumour research in memory of his dad, Michael Spike Friel.

Dean Jones and Adam Hodgson will step into the ring to raise money for the British Lung Foundation and John Ennis will take on Lewis Minshaw in a cruiserweight fight.

West Cumbrians Zac Davenport and Carl Walmsley will face off, while heavyweights Liam Hazzard and Shaun Tierney will also trade blows.

The cage will be situated on the speedway track at the stadium, in front of the main stand.
