A fund-raising day in memory of a sports fan who played golf until his last day of life is due to be held at Workington Golf Club on Sunday.

Wilf Harrison, keen golfer and former chairman of Workington Town Rugby Club, died in May last year at the age of 63.

He had skin cancer.

Mr Harrison had been a member of the golf club for many years.

The club and Mr Harrison's family have joined forces to organise the event for Melanoma UK in his memory.

They hope it will become an annual event.

His daughter Kerry, 34, said: "Until the day he died, my dad was up at the golf club every single day playing with his friends. He was a very well-known man and a lot of his friends will be there on Sunday."

The golf club is holding a competition in Mr Harrison's memory and there will be tombola, raffles and games.

Prizes include a Mini and a BMW for a weekend offered by Lloyd Cockermouth, signed memorabilia from Workington Town, gym memberships and vouchers.

Mr Harrison's wife Joyce, 63, his other daughters Kerry and Lisa, 40, and grandson Harrison Carruthers, 13, will be there on the day to remember him and raise awareness of melanoma skin cancer.

Kerry added: "My dad loved sports, he was on the board of Workington Town for at least a decade, but he loved any sport, cricket, golf, you name it.

"The golf club, which he was very passionate about, is giving us a great opportunity to raise awareness of melanoma and raise some funds and this is the first of an event that we'll be holding every year from now on."
