Maryport wheelchair racer Simon Lawson’s dream of competing at the 2016 Paralympics has been given a cash boost from golfers in the town.

Organisers of the annual Jimmy McCracken Memorial Open, played last month at Maryport Golf Club, have presented Lawson with a share of the money raised on the day.

Money raised from the competition is always donated to various good causes and organisations in and around the Maryport area.

Lawson will receive £600 from this year’s fund and Maryport Amateurs junior football club and Maryport/Glasson junior rugby club will each receive £300.

Lawson, 33, is competing at various events across the globe in the hope that he will be selected to represent Great Britain at the Rio Paralympics next year.

The money from the Jimmy McCracken Memorial Open has gone towards Lawson’s travelling expenses for the Chicago Marathon on October 11.

Lawson said: “It was kind of out of the blue and I was chuffed to bits.”

More than 80 golfers took part in this year’s Jimmy McCracken Memorial Open.

It was won by Mr McCracken’s cousin David Holliday.

Mr McCracken’s family and organisers thanked all the sponsors and competitors for taking part.

Meanwhile, Lawson was competing at Berlin Marathon in Germany on Sunday but was disappointed despite a strong fifth-place finish.

He was in second, chasing eventual winner David Weir, when his wheel got caught in tram lines and he crashed.

He lost about four minutes and finished fifth in a time of one hour, 33 minutes.

Lawson added: “I was a bit disappointed because I was on for a good time.”

He will compete in the Great Scottish Run in Glasgow, an event he won in 2013, this weekend.
