Ireland's most successful boxer ever had a special message for Workington fighter Darren Askew.

Former WBO middleweight and super-middleweight champion Steve Collins was at Maryport Rugby League Club last Friday for a sportsman’s dinner.

Collins, 51, posed for a picture while holding a written message for Askew, a former Workington man who is now competing in Australia, ahead of his WBU super lightweight title fight against Anthony Taylor in New Zealand on August 22.

The message read: “To Daz, all the best in your title fight. Keep your dukes up.”

The event was organised by Nemesis Boxing Club in Maryport and Bricktop Promotions.

Collins entertained the audience with anecdotes about his career.

The next sportsman’s dinner will feature Cass Pennant.

Adrian Kirkbride, of the club, thanked everyone who was involved with the event.
