Lakes College students saw off their counterparts from around the county to win the inaugural Cumbria Sports Games last week.

Athletes from Lakes College, Carlisle College, Kendal College, Newton Rigg and Furness College all came to the Cumbria Sports Academy in Hensingham to participate in the new event.

It was organised by Mark Banks, Sports Maker at Lakes College, along with Alison Hastie from the Association of Colleges (North West).

The students took part in the shot putt, long jump, discus, high jump, 100m, 200m and 800m, plus the 4x100m relay to celebrate the lead up to the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Mark Banks said: "It’s really fantastic to see students from all areas competing and being active, and we were especially fortunate to have such great weather on the day.

"All the students were really enthusiastic and thoroughly enjoyed the day. I’m obviously really happy to see our team win, however all teams put in a fantastic effort and worked incredibly hard.

"We were also very appreciative to have the support of Seaton Athletics club who helped in making the event run so smoothly."

The event was organised to enhance and develop sports and physical activity opportunities in both further and higher education in Cumbria.
