Race ace Simon Lawson improved his chances of making it to Rio 2016 Olympics with a strong finish at the Great North Run.

The Maryport wheelchair racer finished second in the North East in a time of 44 minutes, 44 seconds, around two minutes behind Paralympic wheelchair athlete David Weir.

Lawson, 33, finished second in last year's race but believes the 2015 Great North Run, the world's largest half marathon, had a stronger field.

He finished ahead of Canadian Josh Cassidy, who has previously won the London and Boston marathons.

Lawson said: "There was a good top five. It's looking good for Rio but I won't know anything until next year.

"There is no half marathon in Rio but results like at the weekend will go in my favour."

Lawson has a packed schedule ahead of him.

He will compete in the Berlin Marathon on September 27. He will then take part in the Great Scottish Run in Glasgow, an event he won in 2013, and the Chicago Marathon in the United States.
