A fine performance from Workington swimmer Lucy McKenzie saw her finish seventh in the Women's 400m Individual Medley final at the British Championships.

The event is used to finalise the Great Britain team for the upcoming Rio Olympics.

The 18-year-old, who is at Salford University, finished in a time of 4:47.61 behind eventual winner Hannah Miley.

McKenzie, a former St Joseph's School pupil, qualified for the final in a time of 4:48.65 in her heat earlier in the day and started the final in lane two.

Also in action at the first day of the Championships in Glasgow was Cockermouth swimmer Edward Baxter.

He competed in the men's Target Tokyo 100m Breaststroke final, finishing fourth in a time of 1:03.48.

Tomorrow will see fellow Cockermouth star Luke Greenbank take to the water for the first time in the heats of the Men's Open 100m Backstroke.
