Cockermouth's Luke Greenbank believes he is well-positioned to challenge for the 200m backstroke British title on Sunday.

Greenbank made a promising start to the British Championships as he won the Tokyo Target final in the 100m backstroke on Wednesday night, while his favoured event, the 200m is still to come.

Finishing in 55.02, within half a second of his personal best, Greenbank showed that he is in good form.

"That was a lot better than in the morning and I kept it together a little better. That’s what my coach wanted me to do so I’m pleased," said Greenbank after the final.

“I missed out on the open final which was a bit disappointing so it’s good to have done well in the Tokyo Target final.

“In the morning I wasn’t quite as fast I would have liked but it’s the first event so I was still getting into it.”

Greenbank’s main event is the 200m backstroke, for which he is seeded first on Sunday, although he will also compete in the 100m butterfly and the 200m individual medley.

It’s been a big season for Greenbank, who has been racing on the World Cup circuit for the first time, impressing in the 200m backstroke.

And he believes he is well-positioned to challenge for the title in that event, and potentially push for a place in Rio.

He added: “I’m in good shape going into the 200m, it’s not until the end of the week and I’ve got a couple of entries to keep me going.

“But there’s nothing too serious so I’m really looking forward to that one.”
