Keswick School pupil Mark Donovan has clinched an amazing double as he scooped a national title and a Great Britain call-up in the space of one week.

The sixth former was first crowned Cyclo-cross junior men’s national champion.

And to top off a fantastic week, he was included in the Great Britain team for the UCI Cyclo-cross World Championships, in Belgium at the end of the month.

The 16-year-old, who competes for Beacon Wheelers, led from the first lap at the British Cycling National Cyclo-cross Championships, in Shrewsbury.

By the second lap Donovan had a small lead which he increased on to clinch victory.

“It was a really tough race with all the mud and so much running,” said Donovan.

“I’ve been doing a bit of running training which really helped. It was really technical in the wooded section and really tough.

“I got pushed all the way to the line but knew I had a good gap and I tried to keep calm and not make any mistakes."

He added: "I knew I was one of the favourites and had a good chance so went all out from the start.

"To get the win was amazing and I can’t quite believe it yet.”

Mark now gets the privilege of wearing the GB red, white and blue national champion jersey for his discipline, similar to that worn by other national champions such as Sir Bradley Wiggins and Sir Chris Hoy.

He will now look forward to the World Championships in Zolder, Belgium, on January 30-31.
