Two lady golfers from Maryport have qualified for the national final of the Peugeot Ladies Golf Union Coronation Foursomes to be held at St Andrews in September.

Wendy Wright and Mairi Stamper, both members of Maryport Golf Club, beat off competition from 93 other pairs to win their area final at Rochdale recently.

They are the only pair from Cumbria to make the final.

Wendy, who is currently the club’s ladies' vice-captain, said: “We are absolutely delighted with our win and cannot wait to play the final.

"The weather made the playing conditions a bit tricky at times but we tried to stay focused and not get downhearted when we played a hole badly.

"We didn’t think we had a winning score when we went into the clubhouse but clearly the weather affected everyone and we pulled it off.”

The Peugeot Ladies Golf Union Coronation Foursomes is the union's leading event for club golfers in Great Britain and Ireland.

Around 28,000 entries from approximately 1,300 clubs enter with their winning pairs aiming to qualify for one of 16 area finals.

Wendy and Mairi were successful and due to work commitments opted to play in the final held at Rochdale which turned out to have a large number of entries.

Mairi, who is relatively new to the game of golf, said: “Wendy and I didn’t have any expectations of winning. We were looking forward to playing a different course and meeting new people which is what I love about these types of competitions.

"Our win is definitely down to Wendy’s experience and her encouragement as a playing partner. I have a high handicap so to be playing a national final at the home of golf is just fantastic.”

The final will be played on the Eden Course on September 21.

The winning pair will be invited to play in the Ricoh 2016 Women’s British Open Pro-Am at Woburn.
