Richard Martindale and George ‘Pal’ Lawman were close to a record in the Workington Victoria club.

The partners, in their first season of racing together, accumulated 82 points – just short of the record established some years ago by John Walters.

In a remarkable season, particularly with young birds, Martindale and Lawman won four Derwent Valley Federation trophies, including the Young Bird Average Cup.

As well as winning the young bird averages in Victoria they also picked-up the Eric Hodgson Memorial Trophy for most points in Federation races.

Morris and Wayne McLuckie were runners-up with 71 points and they won the Inland Average Cup. Evans and Abraham earned 44 points and the Carlisle Glass Cup while Walters and son had 29 but went away with a nice collection of trophies – the old bird average Cup, the Combined Average Cup, the Bobby Anderson Big Cup and a Federation Cup for winning Windrush.

Also collecting honours were: Williams and Hadfield 22 points; Michael and Les Cape 14 points (G. Tubman Cup); John Walsh and son 7 points; Les Blacklock and sons 6 points and the Susan Nelson Memorial Trophy for the best individual performance in the Federation; Jimmy Fulton 4 points and the Ludlow Shield; Wilson, son and Johnston 3 points.

Flimby West coast show for young cocks had 48 entries, judged by Gary Holliday and John Turner. Tickets: 1, 2, 5 A Hayton; 3 R Smallwood; 4 A Walker; 6 Williams and Hadfield; 7, 8 Hunter bros.
