Several West Cumbrian sporting stars are celebrating after picking up prizes at the annual Cumbria Sports Awards.

The event, organised by Active Cumbria, recognises the achievements of the county's players, coaches, teams and volunteers.

The ceremony took place at the Low Wood Bay Resort Hotel in Windermere with Andy Mouncey, a former Great Britain triathlete and coach, the guest speaker.

Twelve main awards and five Rising Star awards were handed out at the ceremony.

Among the winners was elite fitness trainer Barry Johnson, of Eaglesfield near Cockermouth.

The 75-year-old won the Special Award to add to his gold medal at the Geneva European Triathlon Championships earlier this year.

The former European triathlon champion took on five challenges in the lead up to his 75th birthday this summer and raised almost £3,000 for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust.

He tackled five of the highest Lakeland passes by bike, climbed Shepherd's Crag in Borrowdale, swam in Derwentwater and completed the Lakeland Mountain Triathlon.

Branthwaite athlete Olivia Mason picked up one of the five Rising Star awards to cap off a memorable year.

The 14-year-old was crowned county and regional champion and also won titles in the English Schools Championships and the UK Inter Counties Championships.

The Keswick School pupil also beat her own personal best records in the 800m and 1,500m events and represented England for the first time.

She also became a national champion after coming first in the National Cross Country Championships under-13s girls' race.

Workington fitness instructor Gary Lamb won the Be Inspired Award which recognises people who promote the Olympic and Paralympic values of excellence, friendship and respect.

Mr Lamb was homeless as recently as September 2013, but has turned his life around after taking up circuit training sessions.

He is now a qualified fitness instructor and puts people through their paces at Salterbeck Oval Centre.
