Cockermouth's England all-rounder Ben Stokes is out of the second Test against Sri Lanka with injury.

Stokes injured his left knee in the first Test at Headingley, whilst bowling and he has been ruled out.

He will be replaced in the squad by Chris Woakes. He will vie with pace bowler Jake Ball for a place in the final XI for Friday's match at Chester-le-Street.

There is currently no time frame on the absence for the 24-year-old, who will see a consultant tomorrow.

This will be an even bigger blow for Stokes who will miss out on playing a first Test on his home ground.

If England win in Durham then they will clinch the three-Test series.
