Olivia Mason has won her first national track title – being crowned the new English Schools’ Athletics Association junior girls’ 1,500m champion.

The Branthwaite athlete was representing Cumbria at the event. She was third in her opening heat in the junior girls’ 1,500m in a time of 4:42.42 as she conserved her energy.

And in a fantastic final run Olivia just pipped her nearest challenger Anna Smith, of Nottinghamshire, at the line.

Olivia recorded a time of 4:35.21, with Anna just behind in 4:35.50.

“She ran really well,” said proud mum Natalie. “She was under a lot of pressure as she has been at the top of her game for a while now and everybody expects it of her. But she coped with it really well and although she was nervous she performed brilliantly.

“In the final she covered everybody and when somebody made the break at 400 she went with them. Then she kicked at 300 and again at 200 and that was it.”

The youngster is now ranked as the leading under-14 athlete for 1,500m in Europe.

“This year she is four seconds clear in the UK rankings for 1,500 and is the fastest 14-year-old girl in Europe,” added Natalie.

Olivia is now set to test herself at 800m for her club, Border Harriers, in the North of England Championships and the nationals as she aims to improve her second-placed UK ranking at this distance.
