Keswick AC produced both the male and female victors of the Borrowdale Fell Race on Saturday.

Carl Bell and Catherine Spurden clinched the win in the most popular of all the Lakeland fell races which covers a distance of 16.5 miles with 6,000ft ascent.

The race starts outside the Scafell Hotel in Rosthwaite and heads out along the valley bottom before the climb up Bessy Boot which is the first checkpoint.

Some hold back on the first part to save their legs but Carl Bell and Josh Jardine, of Helm Hill, set off like it was a 10k road race.

After Bessy Boot it's a long runnable section over to Esk Hause. This is where Carl pulled a commanding lead over the chasing pack.

Then it's up over the boulder field of Scafell Pike and down the gulley to the corridor route towards the foot of Great Gable.

Then it's fast over to the descent into Honister slate mine before the final climb of Dalehead.

Carl led through all the checkpoints and went on to win in 2:50 ahead of Rob Jebb (Helm Hill) and Simon Booth (Borrowdale).

Carl also secured the Lakeland Classics trophy after winning Wasdale in the fastest time since 1990 and setting a new course record in the Buttermere Horseshoe.

Catherine Spurden had to finish strong to fend off Claire Nance (Lonsdale).

Catherine continued her amazing form of 2017 which has seen her run for England at Sedbergh earlier in the year.

Special mention went to two Keswick runners in particular; to Lesley Malarkey who continues to triumph in her bid to do all the Lakeland Classics races and Jacob Tonkin, who is relatively new to fell running, and has already embraced many races in the season already, running sub four hours at Borrowdale.
