Workington-based swimmer Thomas Millburn has been named in the British marathon team that will head to Marseille for the European Junior Championships.

The three-day competition runs from August 4 to 6 and will see swimmers competing across three different distances.

And Millburn, 19, who trains with Workington and Cockermouth swimming clubs, will tackle the 10km race.

He was selected after a strong 2016 season racing for Great Britain in both the European and World Junior open water swimming championships in Italy and Holland respectively.

The actual selection meet was due to be the Elite athlete race in the Great North Swim in Windermere but the event was cancelled due to the weather.

This is Millburn’s fourth season as a GB swimmer which has seen him compete in four European Championships and two World Championships.

Millburn is part of a 12-man GB team that will head out to Marseille.

Marathon swimming lead Bernie Dietzig said: “This is an exciting opportunity for the 12 swimmers to experience racing against the best in Europe.

“We have selected a promising team for this competition and I am pleased with the interest shown by all of the swimmers on the team. I see a lot of promise and am excited to see what they can achieve in this environment.”
