A Workington man set a new British record at a powerlifting competition.

Karl Gorman, 21, lifted a whopping 187.5kg in the bench press contest at the British Powerlifitng Organisation UK Open Championship in Swansea, Wales recently.

Gorman's lift set the British record for under-23 juniors in the 110kg category.

Gorman, who weighed 102.2kg on the day of the contest, smashed the previous British record of 182.5kg.

It was his first time competing in a powerlifting event, although he started weight training about six years ago.

He said: "I only decided to do the competition at the beginning of August. It gave me five weeks to get ready.

"It was the first competition I have ever done, so I was chuffed."

He added that he was thankful for the support of Ted's Gym in Workington, where he trains, in helping him prepare for the event.

Gorman said he was going to wait and see if he will continue to compete in powerlifting competitions.
