Win puts Steve in second place

THE NORTH West Sea Angling League’s latest competition took place at Beckfoot on Sunday evening with 48 (43 seniors and five juniors) fishing one hour before low water and three hours after.WORKINGTON SAC fished Mawbray on Sunday. The match was fished in a gale-force easterly wind.
The match was fished under catch, measure and release rules, in a light north easterly wind and patchy rain and produced 140 flounder, 31 dab, 15 bass, 12 plaice, six dogfish, one coalfish and one eel for a total length of 6,683cm.
Steve Smith for the Rockhoppers won the match with 10 flounder, three dogfish and a bass for 520cm. This was Steve’s second successive victory and moves him into second place in the league.
Second place was shared between Les Nicholson and John Fleming, both for Maryport. Les took 11 flounder for 261cm and John took 11 flounder and a dab for 361cm.
The team event was won by Maryport with 1,653cm opening up a six point lead over Workington who came third on the night with 1,100cm. Rockhoppers came second with 1,257cm.
Ricky Holt for Maryport won the 13-16 year old junior section with four flounder, three dab and a plaice for 204cm and now shares the lead with long time leader Lewis Neesham for Maryport.
Lee Murphy for Workington was the only other junior to catch fish coming second with two flounder and a whiting for 86cm.
The longest fish prize went to Darren Pape for Harrington for a 58cm bass. This fish was kept and weighed at 4lb 1½oz and is the heaviest fish recorded this year.
ON SUNDAY Maryport DSAC are holding their annual spring open rover competition from Maryport South Pier to Workington Jetty, 10am to 3pm. Call David Underwood on 01900 605765 or Jeff McAllister on 01900 870624.
North West Rockhoppers are holding a Bass Open competition over two days on June 14 and 15. Fishing is from 3pm to 8pm on both days from Maryport Pier to Tommy Legs. There is £1,000 for the heaviest bass taken over the two days. Register at the Butchers Arms, Maryport, 12.30pm to 2.30pm.
Seventeen anglers weighed in seven plaice, two flounder and two dab.
Results: 1 Tommy Tibbs, Distington, 2 plaice 1lb 9¾oz; 2 R Hawley 1lb 7¾oz, 1 plaice and 1 dab; 3, Steven George and J Smith, 13¼oz plaice.
Heaviest fish: Peppy S George, T Tibbs, J Smith, L Murphy. All tied with 13¼oz.
Junior winner was Lee Murphy with one flounder for 13¼oz; 2 Ben Cain 9¼oz.
Next meeting: Jack Club, Friday, June 6 7.30pm.
The club recently held its presentation night when Steven George collected several trophies including the club, the league and the species championships.
Other winners were: Sharon Harkness, ladies’ league champion; Caroline Hannon, ladies’ club champion; Mike Laycock, knock-out winner; Matthew Smith, junior champion.
