Hot fishing

WORKINGTON Sea Angling club held their latest competition at Mawbray on Sunday with 18 anglers fishing four hours up to high water.

Conditions were better suited to sunbathing and swimming with it being red hot and no wind.

The match was fished on a small tide and with the lack of tide-run the water was crystal clear, making the fishing difficult. There were a few under-size bass, flounder and plaice caught but less than half the competitors managed to find a sizable fish.

Best bag and heaviest fish went to the club secretary, Caroline Hanon, with a 1lb 2¾oz plaice.

Second was Howard Knudtson with a 14½oz plaice and third was Mike Laycock with a 13¼oz plaice.

Lee Murphy was the only junior to catch, 9¼oz flounder.

The club’s next match is at Workington on August 2, 9pm-1am from the south end of the beach to the blocks and from the end of the pier to the second railway bridge with the blocks out of bounds.

The next club meeting is at the Union Jack today at 7.30pm. New members welcome, or contact Howard on 01900 68614.
