THE latest North West Sea Angling League competition took place between Workington blocks and Harrington pier on Sunday night with 58 anglers – 50 seniors and eight juniors – fishing one hour before low water and three hours after in a light to moderate north westerly wind.
In previous years this venue has produced good catches of cod but so far this season the cod have been slow to make an appearance.
A total of 62 fish came to the scales – 20 rockling, 12 flounder, 11 eel, six dogfish, four plaice, three cod, two pollack, one bass, one whiting and a wrasse for 47lb 1½oz.
Steven Litt, Rockhoppers, won the competition, taking two cod, two eel and three rockling for 6lb 2oz.
Second was Craig Whitehead, Rockhoppers, with two dogfish for 5lb 2¾oz. He also had the heaviest fish at 2lb 14oz which also won him the league’s snowball competition.
Ashton Neesham, Maryport, came third with one cod, one pollack and a rockling for 3lb 10oz.
Rockhoppers won the team event with 14lb 14¾oz ahead of the league leaders Maryport with 13lb 5¾oz.
Ricky Holt for Maryport won the 13-16-year-old junior competition with two plaice and a flounder for 2lb 8¾oz. This result also earned him sixth overall and second in the B league, moving him in to first in the junior championship, the B league and the league championship.
Matthew Smith, Workington, won the 8-12-year-old junior section with a flounder weighing 1lb. With only three matches left this gives him the 8-12-year junior championship.
