World medals for orienteers

THREE West Cumberland Orienteering Club juniors won medals for England in the World Schools Championships in Scotland.
Charlotte Watson won two individual golds and a team gold while Graham Hemingway won a team silver.
Running in the classic race in Devilla Forest, near Kincardine, Watson took gold in 32.52 for the 4km course. Her sister Rosie took eighth in 40.17.
The Latvian junior girls select team ended the day with a 61-second lead from the England team, the top three times being added together to produce the team time.
Later in the week in the middle distance race at Barr Wood. Charlotte destroyed the opposition with a brilliant sprint over the 2.1km 11-control woodland course tp take the gold in 12.01. Rosie finished an excellent seventh in 14.28.
Charlotte’s win was instrumental in overturning the Latvian team’s lead when the second race times were included. The England team ended with an 84-second margin for the middle distance race, giving an overall 23-second win, and a team gold medal position.
Hemingway running as part of the England junior boy select team which took silver.
He had a very strong run in the middle distance event to take sixth.
Twenty countries were represented at the championships. England teams more than held their own against teams from Estonia, Latvia, Sweden and Austria.
