Turbine runs

THE fifth event in the secondary school orienteering league was held amongst the wind turbines at Oldside, Workington.

Wonderfully warm sunshine made the sharp climbs on the 2km courses hard work. The summer vegetation also made the navigation difficult by reducing the visibility, which made the courses quite tricky.

Matthew Atkinson (Keswick) had a stormer to set an unbeatable time on the A course.

On the parallel B course Rosie Watson took a well deserved win, but still two minutes slower than Atkinson’s time.

Both Watson and Atkinson have maximum points in the league, with three wins each. With just one more event to go their positions look safe.

The school team competition, which involves the best 20 individual scores from the league, will have to wait for the last event. The team scores are still too close to call.

Details of the results and the league can be found on the website www.lakes-o.freeserve.co.uk
