Fast Chris

WEST Cumberland Orienteers’ evening event was on Mell Fell, near Troutbeck. The start was placed high on the fellside, giving a mainly downhill race, although the planner still managed 140m climb on the 4km-long course.

Chris Emerson had an outstanding run on the long to keep Michael Billinghurst in second. The recent growth in the bracken meant careful navigation was essential.

Charlotte Watson was first lady on the long only five minutes behind Emerson. Her sister, Rosie, won on the short.

Quite a few juniors from the school league tried the easy course, tackling the open fellside with confidence.

The summer series continues throughout June and July with the details of the various events on the website www.wcoc.org.uk and on the answerphone 01768 895539.

There are courses to suit all abilities, and with a very informal structure anyone is welcome to turn up and have a go.
