West winners at county event

THE Cumbria Schools Orienteering Championships were held at The Beacon, near Penrith, a complex piece of woodland with a strong path network providing a perfect challenge for the runners. West Cumbria schools had some outstanding performances.

Warm sunshine and a compact assembly area in the forest gave a carnival atmosphere to the proceedings.

Wins were recorded by Rosie Watson (Keswick), Year 8 girls; Charlotte Watson (Keswick), Year 10 girls; Lewis Taylor (Cockermouth), Year 10 boys.

The team competition also provided considerable excitement with Cockermouth taking third in the secondary contest.
