Cold blasts hit times

A COLD windy evening meant few Lakeland Sprinters riders managed new personal bests at Rowrah Karting Stadium last Wednesday.

But division four riders Poppy Watson and Connie Symonds both managed to beat the odds and the weather to take new pbs in the 500m time trial with three minutes 45 seconds and 5.25 respectively.

Watson has improved her times every single week since she started coming Lakeland Sprinters this year and Symonds, who first rode only a week ago, reduced her time by nearly three minutes.

In the combined divisions two and three 1km time trial, Scott Glaister (3.40 pb) and George Hodgson (3.43 pb) both took nearly 20 seconds off their previous bests.

And in division one three riders managed new pbs - Alex Hargreaves 2.20, George Bennett 2.34 and Fletcher Hodgson 2.38.

Ailsa Cowen took the prize for most consistent rider. She has equalled her pb on each of the last three occasions, riding the kilometre on exactly 2.49 time.

In addition to the 1km time trial division one riders did a 6km team pursuit race and a handicapped bunch race.

In the 4km handicapped bunch race, riders were grouped at the start line according to their time trial times that evening.

Kristain Cook, Stephen Gascoigne, Thomas Lennox and Ailsa Cowen were first off, followed 20 seconds later by Fletcher Hodgson - newly promoted to division one - Patrick Cowman, Sam Heyworth and George Bennett.

Twenty seconds after this second wave were Daniel Baron, Jason Jenkinson, William Hughes and Alex Hargreaves, whilst Jordan Peck started 40 seconds after this bunch and a whole one minute 20 seconds after the first riders.

The first five were Lennox, Cook, Bennett, Cowman and Haywood in that order. Jordon Peck came in only seconds after the winners, the whole lap handicap proving just a fraction too much even for him.

In the 6km team time trial, Peck, Lennox, Haywood, Hughes, Cook and Daniel Baron finished in 7.39 but were beaten by Barnaby Angus-Southall, Hargreaves, Jenkinson, Bennett, Gascoigne and Cowen with their time of 7.22.

Time trial results - Division 4 (500m): Jack McDonagh 2.24, Mabel Symonds 2.29, Harvey Canning 2.49, Ben Frankland 2.51, Lauren Whitby 3.15, Poppy Watson 3.45 pb, Joshua Hewitt 5.00, Connie Symonds 5.35 pb.
