Fast bikes on A66 time trial

THE COUNTY’S fastest cyclists took part in Velo Club Cumbria’s 25-mile time trial from Cockermouth to Keswick and back along with 45 entries from the North East, Lancashire and Yorkshire.
On their local course the West Cumbrians were outstanding although the winner was Derek Parkinson, of Cleveley who clocked 53 minutes 28 seconds.
Second was Eaglesfield’s Brian Payton, VCC, in with 55.33, club-mate Mark Amor was fifth in 56.26 and Peter Brear, VCC, was seventh in 56.36 to take the team award.
Brigham’s Rob Hargreaves, Team Swift, was eighth in 56.52, 11th was Adam Powe, VCC, in 57.50, and 20th was Distington’s Alan Roper, VCC, with 1.01.42.
Ken Hargreaves was second in the over-60 category in 1.02.17 for 22nd and winning the junior prize was Richard Houghton, Keswick Bikes, in 1.00.44 in 16th.
Sharon Wright, Durham, of the newly formed Team Swift ladies’ team, won the women’s prize. Ged Brear, VCC, of Whitehaven was third in the over 60s in 1.08.08.
In the previous week’s Circuit of the Dales, a 50-mile time trial,Velo riders did well with Mark Amor highest in 11th in 2.15.26. Peter Brear was 13th in 2.16.03 and Geoff Ayers, of Eaglesfield, clocked 2.24.15.
In Barrow Central Wheelers’ 10-mile time trial at Levens Rob Hargreaves clocked 21.29 for 12th place.
