Payton takes 50-mile cycle championship

VELO Club Cumbria held its 50-mile time trial championship at the weekend. This was an open event and a counter in the national best all rounder competition and attracted nearly 50 cyclists from the north of England.
The weather was warm but with a strong south west wind times were slower with riders having to work very hard up the climb of Embleton especially on the second lap.
On-form Brian Payton, VCC, was the winner in one hour 53 minutes 19 seconds and Rob Hargreaves, Team Swift, made a return to racing after illness to finish in the top 10, seventh in 1.57.15.
Dave Robinson, VCC, in 12th clocked 2.01.56 to beat teammate Adam Powe, 2.02.45, to 13th.
Ken Hargreaves, Team Swift, followed on from his wins in Lancashire, and was fastest of the over-65s in 2.06.30 to come 19th.
Julian Cook, who with Ken was held up by a vehicle accident on the dual carriageway at Bass lake, finished 20th in 2.07.36.
In 25th place was Dave Hayton, VCC, second in the O50s in 2.20.00 and Ralph Oldfield, Honister 92, came in 26th in 2.20.41.
Neil Herzberg, VCC, was 27th in 2.21.37 followed by Angus Black 28th in 2.27.22 and in 30th was Martin Jenkinson, VCC, in 2.28.58 .
In the Tuesday evening club event Payton took the win in 21.53 ahead of Mark Amor, VCC, 22.10, and Sean Hoban, VCC, was third and first O40 in 24.11.
Fell runner Chris Knowles was next in 24.28 with Mike Wylie, Honister 92, fifth in 24.29.
First juvenile was Jordon Peck in 27.47 with lady winner Wendy Thomas achieving a pb in 28.05.
n Eaglesfield’s Ken Hargreaves, Team Swift, VCC and DVCC, won the over-65s’ category in Preston Wheelers’ 25-mile time trial in 1.01.24 and was second in the VTTA North Lancs 25-mile vets-only race against 60 veterans in 1.02.00.
