Thai night kicks for fight crowd

THE last ever Thai boxing night at Maryport’s Civic Hall has been hailed a great success by organiser Tommy Collins.

And he is determined that such events will continue in the town - he’s already planning another for later in the year, hopefully at the Netherhall Sports Centre.

The main feature of Saturday’s final bouts at the Civic Hall - which is soon to be demolished - was an England v Germany international.

Germany won 3-1 but, says Collins, it could have been very different as all the bouts were extremely close.

Nicola Simpson, from Leeds, was the only winner for England. There were narrow defeats for Keswick’s Zoe Green, Dearham’s Chris Stenson and Maryport’s Paul Young.

The night also included several other fights which included a superb performance by 14-year-old Jackson Barkhouse, of Maryport.

His scheduled opponent, another junior, couldn’t fight from Barkhouse took on an adult, Mick Wright, of Scotland, and beat him.

Gareth O'Leary, of Workington, also had a good win over Scot Ian Pryde.

Collins, who runs the Maryport Dragons Thai boxing club, said: “The Germans were so impressed they’ve asked us to go over there to fight. “We had 400-500 spectators and everyone loved it. We’ll be having more.”
