Elvington speed

ROUND seven of the TJ Services Northern Speed championship was at Elvington near York and with all the classes and the overall title still up for grabs, most of the front runners from Wigton Motor Club were there.

The weather was very changeable with a huge downpour just after lunch but after an hour or so of sunshine it dried up for the last run.

In the up to 1400cc road cars the class was mostly filled by Wigton entries with David Wiggins putting on a dominant display to win by a massive margin.

Dennis Hope managed a mid-field finish in his MGF in the next class up with Jonathan Lyth coming in eighth in the largest capacity class in his BMW.

Mike Hunter put on an impressive display in his Metro GTI to win the small capacity modified production class by several seconds.

Rebecca Keen wasn’t so lucky in the large capacity class, having a few spins in the changeable conditions and coming in fourth in class.

Paul Bowness was up against an extremely expensive looking Radical SR3 in the sports libre class but managed to snatch victory by less than a second.

Colin Birkbeck, still in with a chance of an overall championship win, pushed his Caterham R500 to the limit, winning his class and posting the third fastest time. Harry Moody was second in the same class in his Caterham.

Terry and Darren Coleman faced an uphill struggle in the large capacity Sports Libre class, being up against a £60,000 Juno V6 sports racer that posted the fastest time of the day. They both got within a few seconds of the Juno with Terry coming out on top, a couple of seconds ahead of Darren.

Peter Garforth had a few early problems but managed to go second quickest overall, less than a second behind the Juno.

Peter Sewell won the classic car class in his MGB by several seconds.
