Fight on to avoid relegation fight

WORKINGTON Reds go into tomorrow’s proverbial six-pointer against Hinckley hoping to carry on from Tuesday’s night superb performance.
Boss Darren Edmondson thanked his players for getting their season back on track with a storming display against play-offs chasing Hyde.
Goals from Graham Anthony and Dave Hewson gave Reds a 2-0 win at Borough Park on Tuesday night.
Edmondson has always insisted that confidence among the players is high despite winning just one of nine league games before Tuesday night.
He said: “This is what the team is capable of when they believe in themselves. The second-half performance was excellent and we never let-up after making such a good start.
“We believe in the players, and know what they are capable of. They are an honest bunch but have been low in confidence. When they play like they can, as they did against Hyde, they can give everyone a game.”
A depressing run of defeats have seen Reds slide down the table towards the relegation zone and before Tuesday’s win they were just seven points above safety.
Now they are 10 points clear of Hinckley who are third from bottom and who are tomorrow’s opponents at Borough Park (3pm ko).
Edmondson is under no illusions about the importance of the game.
He said: “Obviously I don’t want Tuesday’s win to be a one-off and I hope we can kick on and give some more performances like this over the last 11 games, starting against Hinckley.
“They are fighting for their lives so it’s going to be a different kind of challenge but if we can start the game how we finished against Hyde then that will do just fine.”
Of Reds 11 remaining games seven are at home. Reds also have either two or three games in hand on the clubs below.
Meanwhile, skipper Kyle May is just starting his rehab programme after it was confirmed that he will be out of action for the rest of the season.
May has seen Carlisle Utd physio Neil Dalton who confirmed that the injury is to the medial knee ligaments and May will be out for up to 10 weeks.
May said: “I’m not the best watcher in the game although I went to Stalybridge and was at Borough Park on Tuesday but it was great to see the lads get the win they deserved. We are a lot better team than our league position indicates.”
His absence at Stalybridge ended a run of 113 consecutive games in the Blue Square North.
May was in the side which played for the first time in Conference North on August 2005 and hadn’t missed a league game until Saturday.
May had also played the last 29 games of the Unibond Premier season so his consecutive first team sequence has ended at 142 games.
