Mistake to leave the Reds, admits Cassidy

The former Northern Ireland international has now left the Unibond League North club and is waiting for a legal settlement on his contract.

He said: “Hindsight is a wonderful thing but I wish that I had never made the move. I’m very disappointed in how things have worked out.

“I left Reds for the right reasons - the travelling and Blue Star’s ambition mainly. It was never about the money.

“But the fact that Blue Star have asked to be relegated at the end of the season and go back to the Northern League was very disappointing.”

Meanwhile manager Darren Edmondson is prepared to look at moving Reds’ midweek date but would be content to keep faith with Tuesday.

He said: “I know West Cumbrians watch Carlisle Utd if they are playing on the same night. I’m quite happy to keep Tuesday, but if it means more money in the bank we’ll have to move it.”

A group of Dutch football enthusiasts sponsored Workington’s Blue Square North game with Hinckley United.

Phoenix 92 are Holland’s equivalent of British ground-hoppers and the half-a-dozen who came over for Saturday’s game take a special interest in English clubs.

Spokesman Van Arkelen said: “We have an interest in Workington as they are a former league club and we were especially pleased with our reception at Borough Park and the way we were treated.”

Edmondson felt that Reds deserved to get at least a point and knew that they had been guilty of missed chances before Hinckley scored their goal.

He said: “The lads were actually quite down at the end because they thought it was a game they should have won comfortably.”

Michael Reed equalised in the 90th minute.

Relegation threatened Vauxhall Motors travel to Borough Park tomorrow with Reds making the journey to Southport on Easter Monday.
